This is a study of the word “prostrate” and it’s biblical meanings, I did this study because The Messiah” Prostrated” himself when he reached Golgotha! I have put notes beneath word meanings in search of what The Messiah did at Golgotha and putting them together I found what I have written in the conclusion!

H1457 גּהר gâhar gaw-har’ A chief word of descent; to prostrate oneself: – cast self (himself 1 Kings 18:42) down, (stretched 2 Kings 4:34,35) stretch self.

The Messiah cast himself down. The Messiah stetched, or was stretched, The Messiah was weak and exhausted, and his battered, and beaten body, was full of aches and pains, so I doubt that The Messiah stretched himself out. The Messiah was stretched.

H2522 חלשׁ châlash khaw-lash’ An ancient word of descent; to prostrate; implying to overthrow, decay: – discomfit, waste away, weaken.

The Messiah was discomfited. The Messiah was wasting away. The Messiah was weak. The Messiah was getting weaker.

H2856 חתם châtham khaw-tham’ An ancient word of descent; to close up; particularly to seal: – mark, make an end, seal (up), stop.

H3766 כּרע kâra‛ kaw-rah’ An ancient word of descent; to bend the knee; implying to sink, to prostrate: – bow (down, self), bring down (low), smite (stoop) down, couch, cast down, fall, feeble, sink, subdue, very.

The Messiah fell face down before God when he pleaded for this cup to pass from him in the garden of Gethsemsane. Matthew 26:39 When the The Messiah arrived at Golgotha and saw men, and nails, and hammers, and when he saw the hole, that was dug for his grave, and Simon of Cyrene lay the stake to which he was be to fixed upon the ground, the battered and feeble, and afflicted with pain, and [terrified. Matthew 26:39,42] Messiah fell face down before his Father, the LORD God Almighty and prayed! [This is not necessarily the way it happened! Noelene.]

H5456 סגד sâgad saw-gad’ An ancient word of descent; to prostrate oneself (in homage): – fall down, do obeisance.

The Messiah fell down and did obeisance to (worshipped) God.

[Homage. H7812 שׁחה shâchâh shaw-khaw’An ancient word of descent; to depress, eg; prostrate (particularly reflexively in homage to God or royalty): – crouch, make to stoop, bow (self) down, fall down (flat), do (make) obeisance, do reverence, worship, humbly beseech.]

[The Messiah, exhausted and in abject terror, and suffering tremendously, virtually collapsed, and crouched, like a dog, as he stooped and bowed down, and (reflexively: naturally?) fell down flat on the ground, and worshipped his Father, and humbly pleaded with him (And he .. prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. Mat 26:39 ???]

H7511 רפס râphas raw-fas’ Ancient word of descent; to trample, that is, prostrate: – (to) humble self, to stir up self, submit self.

The Messiah stirred up himself, humbled himself, and submitted himself to God.

H7812 שׁחה shâchâh shaw-khaw’ An ancient word of descent; to depress, prostrate (particularly reflexively in homage to royalty or God): – fall down (flat), bow (self) down, make to stoop, crouch, humbly beseech, do (make) obeisance, do reverence, worship.

The Messiah (reflexively: naturally?) fell down (flat), worshipped, made obeisance to, and humbly beseeched God.

G2693 καταστρώννυμι katastrōnnumi kat-as-trone’-noo-mee From G2596 and G4766; to strew down, implying to strew down, that to prostrate (slay): – overthrow.

G4766 στρώννυμι strōnnumi strone’-noo-mee Or a simpler form στρωννύω strōnnuō strone’-noo’-o, lengthened from a still simpler form στρόω stroō stro’-o (used only as an alternate in definite tenses; possibly related to G4731 through the idea of positing); to “strew”, that is, spread (as a carpet or couch): – spread, (to) strew, make bed, furnish.

G4731 στερεός stereos ster-eh-os’ From G2476; stiff, that is, solid, stable (literally or abstractly): – stedfast, strong, sure.

G2476 ἵστημι histēmi his’-tay-mee A lengthened form of a chief word στάω staō (of similar meaning, and which in certain tenses is used for it); to stand (in- transitively), used in diverse applications (literally or abstractly): – appoint, covenant, establish, bring, continue, lay, present, stanch, stand (by, forth, still, up), set (up), hold up. Compare G5087. [Stanch Dictionary: Stop flow of blood.]

The bed of The Messiah upon which he was (spread) strewn was stiff, solid and stable, [Stanch worldly. Stop flow of blood.] Blood flowed from his hands and feet, and someone may have attempted to stop the flow, and the stiff, solid and stable object was [set (up)], stood up. [The body of The Messiah was further stretched. (if there was no footrest. He was treated as a criminal so there was probably no footrest!) The weight of his body pulled upon his hands that were nailed to the pole, after the instrument of capital punishment (with possibly a jolt, was dropped into the hole!) was stood up in the hole! Someone propably, had to pack the hole, with stones, and also dirt.]

G4352 προσκυνέω proskuneō pros-koo-neh’-o From G4314 and possibly derived from G2965 (which means to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand); to fawn, crouch to, (literally or abstractly) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): – worship, to kiss (the hand) toward.

The Messiah crouched, bowed down, prostrated himself in homage, and (possibly kissing God’s hand) worshipped God. [I have actually had experiences where I have kissed my hands, I think, it was due to the presence of a spirit within me? It is possible that as The Messiah fell to the earth in homage to God, an angel, (or God) was (once again) strengthening him, and since he was cut off from God, he may have become aware of something within his hands, that caused him to kiss them, as he was face down on the ground. Luke 22:41-44]

G4363 προσπίπτω prospiptō pros-pip’-to From G4314 and G4098; to fall towards, (gently) prostrate oneself (in supplication or homage), or (violently) to rush upon (in storm): – beat upon, fall (down) at (before).

G4314 πρός pros pros A stronger form of G4253; preposition of direction; forward to, eg: toward (with genitive case the side of, eg: pertaining to; with dative case by the side of, eg: near to; generally with accusative case the time, occasion, place, or respect, which is the destination of the relation, eg: whither or for which it is foretold): – according to, because of, ([where-]) by, for, for intent, of, which pertain to, that, to (the end that), about, among, against, before, between, in, with (-in) together, to ([you]) -ward, unto, nigh unto, at, at thy house, Essentially signifying the same applications in compounds namely, accession to, motion towards, nearness at.

G4253 πρό pro pro A chief preposition; “fore”, eg: in front of, prior (abstractly superior) to. In compounds it keeps the same significations: – above, before, ago, or ever.

G4098 πίπτω, πέτω piptō petō pip’-to, pet’-o The first is a reduplicated and contracted form of the second (which occurs only as an alternate in certain tenses); probably related too G4072 through the idea of alighting; to fall (literally of figuratively): – fail, fall (down), light on.

When reaching Golgotha The Messiah gently fell down forward, prostrating himself in supplication and homage before God.

G4385 προτείνω proteinō prot-i’-no From G4253 and τείνω tein ō (to stretch); to protend, eg: tie prostrate (for scourging): – bind, (bound Acts 22:5).

Before The Messiah was scourged by Pontius Pilate the Governor he was (probably) laid face down, stretched and bound.

G5087 τίθημι tithēmi tith’-ay-mee An extended form of a chief word θέω theō (used as an alternate in definite tenses); to place (in the broadest application, abstractly and literally; correctly in a passive [Dictionary: offered no active resistance!] or horizontal (Dictionary: flat, level) posture, different from G2476, which correctly indicates an upright and active position, while G2749 is correctly reflexive (Dictionary: Subject is same as it object.) and utterly prostrate : – conceive, commit, appoint, advise, ordain, purpose, give, put, make, bow, kneel down, sink down, lay (down, aside, up), set (forth), settle.

In the above meaning of the Greek word G5087 I see: The idea was conceived to impale The Messiah. It was appointed that The Messiah was to be impaled. The Messiah bowed down. The Messiah kneeled down. The Messiah sunk down. The Messiah laid down upon the object. The object with The Messiah on it was laid on its side. The object with The Messiah on it was set (forth, up). The Messiah settled (his body into some type of comfortable position) on the object.

G5476 χαμαί chamai kham-ah’ee Adverb possibly from the base of G5490 through the concept of a fissure in the soil; earthward, eg: prostrate: – on (to) the ground.

The Messiah fell face down on the ground at Golgotha.

G5490 χάσμα chasma khas’-mah From a form of an outdated chief word, “chao” (to “gape” or “yawn”); a “chasm” or vacancy (impassable interval): – rent, gulf.

The Messiah was separated from his Loving Father and his loving Brothers and Sisters, and there was a (torn) rent, gulf, vacancy (within him) between him and them.

Conclusion!
What did The Messiah do, when he got to Golgotha.

The idea was conceived, to impale The Messiah. It was appointed that The Messiah was to be impaled.

Homage. H7812 [(The Messiah was separated from his Loving Father and his loving Brothers and Sisters, and there was a [[(torn) rent, gulf, vacancy (within him) between him and them.]] When reaching Golgotha ) The Messiah, exhausted, and in abject terror, and suffering tremendously, virtually collapsed, and (sunk down) crouched, like a dog, as he stooped, and (kneeled) bowed down, [cast himself down] and (reflexively: naturally?) (gently) fell (face) down flat on the ground, and he stirred up himself, [prostrating himself in supplication and homage before God.] [and [(possibly kissing God, or an angel’s hand)] did obeisance to] worshipped his Father and humbly pleaded with [beseeched God] him (And he .. prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. Mat 26:39,42 ???] and submitted himself to God.

[Kissing the hand! I have actually had experiences where I have kissed my hands, it was probably, due to the presence of a spirit within me! It is possible that as The Messiah fell to the earth, in homage to God, an angel (or God) was (once again) strengthening him, and since he was cut off from God, he may have became aware, of something, within his hands, that caused him to kiss them, as he was face down on the ground. The Messiah knew his hands were to be pierced. i.e. He knew everything that was going to happen to him. Luke 22:41-44]

The Messiah laid down upon the object. The bed of The Messiah upon which he was (spread) strewn was stiff, solid and stable, [Stanch worldly. Stop flow of blood.] Blood flowed from his hands and feet, and someone may have attempted to stop the flow, (([and The weak, and exhausted, and battered, and beaten body, of The Messiah, that was full of aches and pains, was stretched upon)) the stiff, solid, and stable, object, that was ((laid on its side)) and [set [forth] (up)], stood up. [(The Messiah settled (his body into some type of comfortable position) on the object. )] [The body of The Messiah was further stretched (if there was no footrest. He was treated as a criminal, so there was probably, no footrest!) as the weight of his body pulled upon his hands, that were nailed to the pole. After the instrument of capital punishment, with possibly a jolt, was dropped into the hole!) was stood up, in the hole! Someone probably, had to pack the hole, with stones and also dirt.]

I believe that when the exhausted, and in an intense state of suffering, Messiah, reached Golgotha, gently collapsing on the ground, he prostrated himself, as he had done in the Garden of Gethsemane, and worshipping God, and kissing his hand, pleaded with him in prayer!

  3. this post says:

You highlight some insightful points-though I am concerned you may be missing something. I hope to see you expand this, because you are a very eloquent writer and I enjoy reading your posts.
