15 Behold now [930] behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.
16 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.
17 He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.
18 His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron.
19 He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
20 Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.
21 He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.
22 The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.
23 Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.
24 He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares. Job 40:15-24

What is a hippopotamus?
A hippopotamus is a large water dwelling, short legged, thick skinned, big mouthed African mammal (animal).

Hippos are found in the grasslands of Africa, and in the rainforests of western Africa.

The great hippopotamus lives in the grasslands of Africa where it spends a great deal of its time among reeds within rivers.

The pygmy hippopotamus lives in the rainforests of western Africa.

Hippos give birth to their young among reeds at the banks of rivers. A baby hippo is called a calf. Baby hippos swim and walk shortly after they are born. Calves drink milk from their mothers for the first 18 months of their lives. Calves stay close to their mothers who protect them from predators while they are young.

A group of hippos is called a herd. Hippos live in herds. A herd of hippos is made up of a male, some females and their young calves. Older male hippos live together in other groups. In a herd of hippos all of the females help to look after the young.

The area in which hippos live is called the hippos territory. The male who is the boss of the herd guards the females, the young, and the territory. When a young male enters territory that is occupied by a herd, the males have a fight, and the hippo who wins the fight wins the territory and the herd. Older males get defeated by young males and they have to give up their families (herds) and their homes (territories).

Many hours of a hippo’s days are spent in water. Hippos disappear beneath the surface of water, and walk upon the beds of river’s and lakes. Hippos can stay under water for about 5 minutes. To keep water out of their noses hippos close their nostrils.

Hippos have big heads, long jaws, big mouths, bulbous eyes, short legs, short tails, and rounded fat bodies. When a hippo is in the water, half of the top of its big head seems to be resting on the surface of the water.

The heat of the African sun is fierce, so, hippos spend a lot of their time in water keeping cool. Hippos are protected from sunburn by a special pink fluid which is secreted from their thick and wrinkled skin. When the water in rivers dries up, hippos keep cool by wallowing in the mud.

Hippos are irritated by flies, who are eaten by the oxpecker birds they allow to ride upon their backs. Little plants grow upon the skin of hippos, and beneath the water, fish nibble at the plants.

Hippos come out of the water in the evening to feed upon grass and other plants. Using their large lips hippos cut the grass.

Hippos become aggressive and charge when they feel under threat.

Hippos are slaughtered for their meat, their skin, and also for their ivory teeth. Hippo meat is eaten, hippo skin is used to make whips that are used upon cattle, and the hippos ivory teeth are sold for money.

People are taking territory from hippos, they are cutting down forests of trees, and burning plants, and planting crops. When farmers grow crops on land in hippo territory, the farmers shoot the hungry hippos when they eat the crops.

In Western Africa people are cutting down rainforests, and because they have cut down so many trees pygmy hippos are in danger of becoming extinct.

Hippos need to be protected, you can protect hippos by helping to stop people from cutting down rainforests. Everybody needs forests!
