The LV tried to diversify its traffic base after World War II but the road was built to handle coal and even had trouble competing against the Lackawanna, a well-managed system with a very competitive route of its own. Perth Amboy remained an important terminus for the Lehigh Valley throughout the years although its southerly location placed it a bit too far south of New York. This Pier Station had a full length covered pier, and carfloats would be moored directly to the pier for the loading and unloading of freight directly from the freight cars into and out of the pier shed. I happened to have been given copies of the Erie Railroad magazine by a fan, and from two dozen copies of this monthly periodical I was able to extract the names of just under 1,000 Erie employees who retired between the years of 1947 and 1960!
