Soil can be closely packed together..Soil that is closely packed together grows thick..Soil that is closely packed together is dense..Soil that is closely packed together occupies less space..Soil takes up space.

Compact: make compact, pack closely together, closely packed (together), neatly packed (solid, together), neatly arranged (solid), occupying small space, concise, brief.
Decompose: break down through chemical or bacterial action, separate into elements, rot.
Loam. rich (fertile) soil of clay, sand, and decomposed (decayed) vegetable matter.

Soil is made up of broken down rock and decayed vegetable matter.
